Hello--

It looks like the only real option for getting to SPb from Tallinn these days is the bus (short of an expensive flight through Helsinki). Has anyone taken this ride?

Thanks,

Julia

Hi Julia,

I've done it a few times in the past. There is no train connection at the moment, so it does look like the buses is the only way. There are several services every day - I was quite impressed to discover (just now, searching for a good information site for you) that there are those 'express special' extra comfortable buses running the route, on top of the regular coach service. Check this site: http://www.luxexpress.eu/lang/.

Besides the Eurolines/Lux Express there is also Ecolines - see their site http://www.ecolines.net/. I am not aware of a principal difference between the two, apart from that they leave from different stations in St Petersburg. In Tallinn, I understand, they arrive at the same place.

My personal concern on this route is to cross the border during the day, not at night. There is a passport/customs check on the Russian side, then another one on the Estonian side. You don't want to be awaken in the middle of the night for that. So, I'd take a daytime service.

Thank you for the useful links, Peter. Definitely not worth it to cross the borders at night. I'm glad to see there are so many decent buses.
